Maurice James “Doc” Mosay passed away on January 24, 2021 in Amery, WI. He was born on June 19, 1940 in Amery, WI to Margaret (Moose) and Thomas Mosay.

Maurice lived and grew basically within the Round Lake Community of the St. Croix Chippewa and the Mille Lacs Lake Reservation in Minnesota. “Doc”, as he was known by so many, was a very talented guitar player and musician. He played with the greats like Waylon Jennings and Floyd “Red Crow” Westerman. He received a master’s degree in political science at Macalester College and studied Native American Law at the College of St. Thomas where he received his degree in law.

He was director of the St. Paul American Indian Center for a time and was proudly a part of the beginning of the American Indian Movement along with Clyde Bellecourt, Russell Means, Dennis Banks and Artley Skenadore, a long-time friend and colleague.

Maurice leaves to mourn, his children; Ja Neen Mosay, Renee Mosay, Stephanie Mosay and Jeremy Linton; sisters, Shirley Juarez, Betty Nichols and Phyllis Lowe; special family members, Lisa Mosay, Debbie Bowers, Joaquin Bowers, Rita Moose, Dejon Bowers and Ashley Bowers.

Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Mosay and Margaret (Moose) Mosay; brother, Raymond Allen Mosay; sisters, Victoria Nichols and Susan Sayeed; grandchildren, Shelby Jean Benjamin, Taylor Ray Thompson and Joseph Errol Rogers.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 28, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Kolstad Family Funeral Home in Centuria, WI. He will be laid to rest at the Balsam Lake Cemetery, Balsam Lake, WI.

Masks or facial coverings are required to enter for visitation and please practice social distancing guidelines as laid out by the CDC.

Pallbearers are Ed Juarez, David Juarez, Adren R. Mosay, Joshua Richardson, Buck Zehner and Allen Mosay. Honorary pallbearers will be Artley Skenadore, Michael Juarez, Desmond Mosay, Adonis Mosay, Scott Lowe, Rodney Lowe, Jeremy Linton and Jimmy King.

The Kolstad Family Funeral Home, Centuria, WI, has been entrusted with arrangements.
